Paris: The Louvre

The Louvre Museum is huge, and nobody could see all of it in a day. Each time we visit, we pick one or two areas that we would like to see, and concentrate on them. This time is was the Napoleon III apartments and the French statues in the courtyards.

Napoleon III was the nephew of the better-known Napoleon I. He was elected President of the French Second Republic in 1848, and seized power as Emperor in 1851, giving rise to the Second French Empire. Among other things, he gave Paris its present form by having Baron Haussman build the wide boulevards. He is pictured here, along with his wife Eugénie. He lived in the Louvre, which was then a royal palace, in considerable luxury as shown in the photos.

The French statues are in the courtyards in the centre of the Louvre. These are just some that we liked.

And these are just two other items we happened to like. The tapestry with the angels was hung above the king, so it looked as if angels were crowning him. †
