Besançon, 2-3 July

		Besançon is an interesting town, built mainly from local stone that has changes of colour within the one block, as seen in this house across the road from our hotel. †
		An impressive church, in rather less impressive rain as we walked round the town. †
		A large barracks and administrative block built by Vaubin. The need for a large military presence is not clear to us, as Briançon is not near a border. †
		Decorative fountain on the main street near dusk. †
		The entry to the Vaubin citadel. †
		The formidable moat. †
		The treadmill used to obtain water for the citadel. *
		The substantial buildings inside the citadel, now used for various permanent and temporary exhibitions. †

From Briançon, we moved on to Vézelay.
