Fox Glacier, 6-7 April

Leaving Wanaka, we went along Lake Hawea and then over a gap in the hills for a final stretch along Lake Wanaka. †
Going through the Haast Pass, there were a number of waterfalls near the road. *
People had been piling up the river stones ... *
  including this extraordinary shape. *
Again, the trees were covered in lichen. *
We continued on our way, with cloud low in the Haast River valley ... *
and then walked to another waterfall. †
We went over the long Haast River bridge. *
These were the well-maintained grounds of our motel at Fox Glacier. †
Clouds still hung around the mountains. *
The next morning was fine, but clouds still hung around the mountains. *
We stopped trying to see the mountains, and went along the dirt road to Fox Glacier. †
Again, the trees were covered in moss and lichen. †
We had a very satisfactory view of the glacier. *
We drove to Franz Josef and walked along a path through the rain forest to reach a lookout. *
We had a good view of Franz Josef Glacier. *
Then we walked to Peter's Pool, with good reflections. *
Then back to Fox, where the clouds parted just long enough to get a view of most of the glacier. *
The sunset that evening was spectacular. *

The nest morning we continued north, on our way to Moana on Lake Brunner.
