New Zealand 2015

Wanaka, 3-5 April

Along the road to Wanaka, we went through the little village of Athol, which had this fairly typical country school. †
Later we stopped at a lookout over Lake Wakitipu, near Queenstown. †
  *
  *
Just past Queenstown (which we did not visit), we stopped to see another old bridge, this one over the Shotover River. *
There were good views both up the river ... †
  and down. *
We went up the Crown Range, a difficult road with seven hairpin bends on the hill out of Arrowtown. †
  *
In the car park at the top of Crown Range were these three Ford Model A cars. There was a Model A gathering in Wanaka over the Easter weekend. *
Going down towards Wanaka, the road is not as steep but it is still not an easy road. *
So eventually, we reached Wanaka where we had this view from our motel unit. †

  *
The next morning, we had booked a cruise on Lake Wanaka. This was the boat. *
Wanaka seen from the lake. *
We stopped at one of the islands in the lake and walked up to a lookout. *
This little wagtail followed us as we walked through the bush, and Lynn spent some time trying to photograph it. *
We had refreshments on the island's beach, admiring the view ... †
and then headed back to Wanaka. *
The following day, we headed for the Toy and Transport Museum, housed in several old hangars at Wanaka airport. It is the work of one man, who appears to collect anything he can lay his hands on. Barbie Dolls. *
  Meccano. *
  Star Wars. *
Out in the open, there were cars of less value that could not be squeezed into the hangars ... †
  traction engines ... †
  and even some tanks. †
After lunch in town, we drove to Glendhu Bay which was a very peaceful spot. †

There were some extraordinary cloud patterns. *
  *

From Wanaka, we headed off over the Haast Pass to Fox Glacier.
