New Zealand 2017

Helensville, 19 November

We stayed in Helensville only because our flight arrived at Auckland in mid afternoon and there was not enough time to get from the airport to the Bay of Islands.

Arriving at Auckland airport, we picked up a rental car with bodywork in appalling condition. The rental company was so ashamed of the car that it had tried to scrape its name off the back window. †
There was a lovely sunset that evening. *
Our motel had this carved log near its thermal pool. †
This is the Helensville Hotel. It seems that the owners had achieved the remarkable feat of going broke while selling beer in New Zealand. †
This engine was displayed at the old train station. †

The next morning, we set off up the west coast to reach Kerikeri.
