New Zealand 2017

Taupo, 30 November - 1 December

Heading south from Rotorua, we stopped at Wai-O-Tapu thermal area. This was rather more active and colourful than Hell's Gate, but we had the impression that the whole Rotorua thermal area was less active than when we visited 45 years ago. *

Bubbles in the "Champagne Pool". *
  *
  *
The morning of our day in Taupo, we went for a lake cruise on the Ernest Kemp. *
The cruise was pleasant, with views of Taupo town, but the main interest was some modern Maori rock carvings. †
  *

After lunch, we visited Huka Falls which, unlike the thermal areas, was as impressive as it was 45 years ago. *

  *
Then we went to Aratiatia Rapids. The Huka River has been dammed for a power station just upstream of the rapids, so most of the time, there is only a still pool of water. *
A few times each day, the dam floodgates are opened and water starts to flow into the rapids. *

Eventually, the pool is completely full. *
Back in town for dinner, the local McDonalds was displaying a nicely restored DC3. *

From Taupo, it was another short journey to Tongariro.
