New Zealand 2017

Tongariro, 2-3 December

Climbing the saddle south of Lake Taupo, there was a pleasant view of the lake. †
Chateau Tongariro has been a landmark since 1929. We have stayed there twice, many years ago, but this time it was fully booked. *
The centre of Whakapapa Village, with Mount Ruapehu behind. *
We arrived too early to check in, so we continued up to the ski resort at the end of the road, with ski lodges clinging wherever there was space. *
Beside the road, there were scree slopes ... *
  and alpine flowers. *
  *
  *
  *
  *
The next morning was fine, and we had good views of Mount Ruapehu ... *
  and Mount Ngauruhoe. *
We explored a bit and found a stream. *
We went to Chateau Tongariro for our evening meal, and found that nothing had changed in 45 years. The lounge (for our pre-dinner drink) was exactly the same. *
So was the mountain view. *
  And the dining room. *

From Tongariro National Park, we had an interesting journey to New Plymouth.
