Mont-St-Michel, 21 August

Driving from Bayeux to Mont-St-Michel, we detoured to Hambaye Abbey, in a lovely wooded valley. But it was lunchtime, and so of course we could not go inside.
When we arrived at Mont-St-Michel, we were astounded by the size of the car park. This is a view from the island. We had island accommodation booked, and so were allowed to park close.
Going onto the island, we fought our way up the main (and only) street, which was a solid traffic jam of people on foot. This was our hotel.
View from the causeway of the town walls, with parts of the town visible behind, and the abbey perched on top.
A similar view at night, with the abbey floodlit.
A closer view of the abbey.
Dusk over the waters of the bay ...
  ... and dawn.

Then it was time to start heading back east, to our stop in Chartres.
